Healing Buddha
From the Foreword by John Blofeld
This work is a valuable contribution to our understanding of an aspect of Buddhism that has been little known in the West until now. In Part One, the author draws upon Pali, Sanskrit, Chinese, and Tibetan sources to provide a well-documented account of traditional Buddhist remedies for both physical and, more importantly, spiritual ailments. Despite maintaining scholarly standards, the material is presented in a manner that makes it equally accessible to practicing Mahayana Buddhists, other followers of Eastern wisdom, and academics. Of particular interest is the emphasis on the role of art and aesthetic experience in mental healing practices.
Part Two comprises translations from the Chinese of several complete sutras relating to the Healing Tathagatas that were previously unavailable in any Western language. These careful renderings of sutras will undoubtedly be a welcome addition to the libraries of sacred works being built up by Mahayana Buddhist communities recently established in the West. In addition to being of great interest to students of Buddhism, healing, psychology, and Chinese and Tibetan art.
