Guru Nanak and the Sikh Religion

The Sikh community traces its foundation to the line of ten Gurüs, or Masters, whose lives correspond closely in time to the period of the great Mughals.

Of these ten Masters the first was Guru Nänak, born in 1469. This study is an examination of his life and teachings. It concludes that relatively little can be known about the details of his life and travels, but that much can be understood of his personality and his teachings. These teachings constitute the basis and substance of the Sikh religion. An understanding of the man responsible for them is essential to any understanding of the Sikh religion or of the subsequent history of the Punjab.
