"Essence of Yoga" is a comprehensive guide to the ancient practice of yoga, written by experienced practitioners Michael Volin and Nancy Phelan. This book offers a holistic approach to yoga, incorporating physical postures, breathwork, meditation, and philosophy. With clear instructions and insightful explanations, it provides a valuable resource for both beginners and advanced practitioners, allowing readers to deepen their understanding and experience of yoga's transformative power.
Michael Volin, of White Russian parentage, was born and raised in China, where his grandfather, a Tsarist general, had been stationed since the turn of the century. He initially pursued a career in journalism, working in both North and South China, and gained recognition as a skilled sportsman and athlete.
Growing up in a family deeply interested in mysticism and spirituality, Volin developed a profound fascination with yoga philosophy. In the late 1940s, he joined the renowned yoga teacher Indra Devi at the first yoga school in China. After Devi's departure for the United States, Volin took over as the school's principal and had the rare opportunity to study not only traditional Indian yoga but also Chinese and Tibetan schools of this philosophy.
In 1949, Volin migrated to Australia and established his yoga school in Sydney the following year, earning him the title of the "father of yoga" in the country. He quickly gained a devoted following, teaching hundreds of students annually through his school and regular television appearances. While yoga occupies most of his time, Volin is also a writer and a skilled poet in his native language.
